I bartended at a regular pubish bar. We had 5 beers on tap that stayed pretty much the same (we might change one once a season or something...) and a handfulf of beers in bottle. Not once did we ever serve a beer special.

Being in the bartending world, I of course new every other bartender in town and drank at their bars. None of them served beer specials.

Outside of the frat boy bars with their buckets of corona, no specials existed.

haha. Alright, you must just be a teenager who has never been to a real bar and got confused when someone on Friends ordered a special once and thought that is how bars worked, and now you just have to keep rolling with it to save face.

I'll just let you be then.

I know every bartender in the world and they all serve beer specials.

You washed dishes in a hotel bar.

Maybe, but his advice to just ask what beer is on special and order it is bad advice as most bars have no specials. If the guy is askign for advice to look like he knows what he is doing, then we shouldn't be giving him information that will make him look foolish.

I can't even imagine what collection of crappy frat bars comprise the entirty of your bar experience why. Makes me sad. You know bars actually exist that dont' allow beer pong to be be played and that don't even serve pitchers?

If you come to NYC sometime give me a ring and I'll take you to a nice bar.

Why is not wrong, I think he's just phrasing it in such a way that it doesn't fit with "bar lingo". Instead of special, substitute your chosen lingo: happy hour, deal, sale, recommendation, bartenders choice, drink of the day, etc etc.

I'm not much of a bar veteran or enthusiast, but I would suspect 99% of bars, pubs, speakeasies, and even clubs have some variation of that. Usually goes on a blackboard or some such, and changes or ceases to exist at the whim of the bartenders.

Well, if you are talking about drinks definitely. Not all bars have this (the one I worked at didn't), but many bars have drinks of the day and such... but those are cocktails or shooters, not beer. But if why merely meant a lot of bars have happy hour deals on beers I still think this is bad advice to give to someone looking to branch out and try new drinks.... because all you are going to get there is like half-price Bud Light one day and half-price Miller Light the next. ETA: Asking the bartender for a recommendation isn't a bad idea though. Or looking at what's on tap and if something catches your eye, ask if its good or how it tastes.

Yeah, actually I'd advise the original poster to ignore everyone in this thread except for the two guys who toss around the word "twat" on the internet and drink at places nicknamed "the wife beater."

Surely class acts that will guide you to a well-informed yet fun night of socializing with your respected peers!

I'm guessing you are not a very good bartender. You dont read / listen (essential skill 1), you dont get sarcasm (essential skill 2), you are argumentative (not being arguementative being essential skill 3). More likely you are the bar back; washing glasses, setting up mixers, cutting fruit. Maybe you work service bar in a chain restaurant.

Drink whatever the hell you want, be it a double shot of whiskey or an appletini. People who will look down on you for what you are drinking can go ***************.

Indeed, people who look down on you for drinking or not drinking can go ***************. Frankly, sounds like you need new friends rather than purposefully trying to pick up new tastes and habits
