Jobs you can dress up to

Posted a thread earlier about making more effort in the way I dress going into a new job.

What I was wondering was, there are quite a few well dressed guys on here and I think that a lot of it comes down to what you do for a living. To put it bluntly, unless you're in a certain type of job it is difficult to pull off that look. At least that's the way I see it.

That gets me thinking about the types of jobs that you can dress up to, and there are not many:

Lawyer
Doctor
Sales Executive
Management
Estate Agent/Real Estate
Shop Assistant (Department Stores, Jewellers and some Menswear Stores)
Politician
Media/Celebrity
Teaching (sometimes but rarely)

Otherwise, it all comes under the general office rules.

What do you all think?

Fundraiser - but if you work for University, Hospital or other large Charity (you need to look good, but not too good). If you do this work for a grass roots charity then forget it.

Thing is there's not many jobs that you can dress up to daily. Kept saying I'm going to make an effort when I'm in that type of job but to be honest there's not many, so I may aswell start making an effort now!

So, far all those on here who go to work daily in full suit and tie...

What do you do for a living, and does it warrant the way you dress or is it personal choice?

How about male shoe salesperson... selling either men's or women's shoes. All the ones I have seen wear a suit.

Well, I fall under the doctor category of your list and choose to wear suit and tie (or at least jacket and tie) most days.

But you know, short of there actually being an enforced uniform policy at work, you can dress nicely in ANY job. It may not always be suit & tie but it can still look good even if it's a regular shirt left open collar paired with dress trousers and a nice belt and shoes. Even when there's a uniform, you can make sure you're the only guy there with a uniform that actually fits properly.

Thanks, it is really good to know as I don't know how to turn up for work.

My new job is as a Consultant in the energy industry so I suppose I can just about get away with it. Although I still keep thinking its an basic office/shirt and tie job (or perhaps thats just me putting myself down).

However, as I'm not likely to become a doctor or lawyer without taking a few years out, this is perhaps my only chance of feeling a bit good about myself as I go to work so I suppose I may as well see how it goes.

Professsor? I can't shake the tweed jacket, bow tie stereotype.

Artsy type jobs? You can probably wear whatever you want in one of these.

Musicians?
