I would say that they're of the same quality, they just fit shittier. I have the blue madras shirt from the retail store and the green madras from the outlet. The retail store one is slimmer and has unbranded buttons. The green one is boxier and has J. Crew branded buttons. Otherwise they're exactly the same.

So while the quality of the materials and construction appears to be the same, the overall quality of the item is lower if fit is important to you (which it should be.)

From my experience, I would say that the construction quality of the outlet items is definitely a step down. Even the fabric feels much more harsh and coarse on the same item; oxford shirts for one.

Wore the mcallister desert boots around town today for the first time and they kind of suck. It feels like I'm wearing some dainty slippers or something.

I'll return the other pair I got, but I'll keep the ones I'm wearing now. They're not that bad, but they're that great either.

Why do you think the fleece is by Wings and Horns/CYC? There are other fleece manufacturers out there.

Why do the Mcallisters suck? Are they much different from Clarks DBs? They look fine in the catalog.

Clarks have a much more substantial crepe sole with support for the feet. The mcallisters do not. It seriously feels like I'm wearing ballet slippers or espadrilles when I walk around on the street.

Yeah, it seems like the J.Crew version has thinner, harder soles. It reminded me more of the Target DBs than Clarks.

Wow, and they charge a good 40 bucks more than Clarks for those? To think I almost sprang for those. The power of advertising... those J. Crew photogs can make anything look cool.

+2. Their blazers just look wrong on me. I'm the same height as well.

I have to admit that one thing I like about J. Crew is how well they do their catalogs--how they do their photography. Even if I don't like the item, the photography is almost always interesting.

But the comments about quality, I've heard them more than once.

+1. I saw a JCrew sales associate wearing the Macallisters, and they looked great. I think that's partly because of the thinner sole, but I guess that's also a negative aspect too.
