Well today was different (didnt eat pizza!)
Fastest run of my life, 12 miles, hill repeats in the middle.
Back half of the run was faster than the front, averaged about 8.2 mph.

wednesday: 5miles in bolingbrook Ill (nice example of middle america town 30miles out of Chicago)

thursday: 6miles lakeside run in Chicago (damn this has to rival Charles River as the prettiest by the water run in a city).

Quick notes on chicago area:

- its the first time i've ever been there. its actually a huge metropolis (unlike san francisco which looks big, but is tiny).
- you can quickly gain 10lbs just eating the regular food (which is very very good: pizza, hotdogs, frozen custard, even great soul food)
- people drive fast, very very fast, on the highways going into the city (if there isn't traffic) and they love to change lanes with little to no clearance between cars often/all the time (but there is no out right mad aggressiveness like in california highways).
- the city (millenium park to wrigley area) was the cleanest i've ever seen in america . it weird to actually see an old city thats this clean. i just always assumed older cities needed to have some urban decay. it was as clean as toronto (but toronto is actually really modern).
- everything is a cheaper (even in the city). i had a huge pizza dinner at pizano's with 5 people and didn't spend over $100). If you're used to NYC prices then Chicago is about 30-40% cheaper.

i was probably blinded by the great weather (60s-70s) and only visiting the good parts... but its a great place to take a vacation (even though there doesn't really seem like a reason to go there).

Had a trail race this morning. Really wasn't prepped for the hills... I run trails a lot, exclusively actually, but not at 5k intensity so I lost time there. Bummed cause I could have picked up a few spots with smarter training, oh well. End result was elite division 8th place.

I do not have any set workouts, so this is just an average workout for the past 4 weeks. In the morning I will sprint 1 mile at 12 mph with a 1 % incline to stimulate out door differences, then do 1 minute sprints at 5 mph with 1 minute rest periods or less. I will do leg presses at 180-220 pounds each 10 reps and 10 sets. I do a few other leg weight lifting things. I will then go on the elliptical and set it to a high resistance and keep up an intense pace for 20 minutes to build leg stamina. I then go on the bicycle and do 10-20 minutes but with less resistance and intensity than the elliptical. I then go abdominal weight with 70-90 pounds about 8-10 reps and 10 sets and use the inclined sit up thing and do 50 sit ups 4 times. I will usually leave doing X amount of sprints on the treadmill at 12 mph at 1% incline and will have no problem (I do not use more incline cause if I do I will put pain on the knees, which does not happen when its a low incline).

In the evening the cardio is similar but I do more arm weight lifting instead of leg, which is not as important I assume, so I will not go into details.

I go to a padded track to run the mile a few times a week to see the progress, but it seems that I can not just get past 4:40. I feel very light running and my breathing is great. Is it just that I need more leg muscle mass to get more ATP release to have more force or is this around my physical limitation?

Do you have access to stairs/stadium or a rowing machine? They are your friend for cross-training aerobic/anaerobic capacity..

At your weight/height you certainly aren't limited by your size (its very possible you could go faster), but there may be natural genetic limits. I would say that if you've only been at it for 6 weeks you've yet to hit your physical limit. If I were you the first thing I would do is get off that treadmill and get on the road or track and run more. The best runners will never be found on a treadmill.

Your weight work should continue, keep the leg work high rep, low weight. A mile run is still a pretty powerful run so some muscle mass is required. Compound and dynamic lifts can be very beneficial, just use them towards your purpose as ancillary work. Snatches, dead lifts, cleans and squats are all you really need. Try incorporating this sort of weight work into your routine in whatever capacity you feel comfortable without it dragging on your ability to run. I'd also lose the core specific work, or at least change it up, there is no need for you to be doing weighted core work. Look into planks and levers... static gymnast stuff is excellent. All this is secondary to your road/track work though.

4.1 miles in 33 minutes. Really miserable running conditions -- very windy, which made a 60-degree day feel like a 40-degree one, and made 7:30 minute miles in 8:00 miles.

Let me know next time you are here, it gets better. I live on the North Shore, which is the crown Jewel of the area.....
But you are right, its nice here. Only issue is it is very very flat. Up where I am, I can find a few hills but in general I need to go to WI to get real hills.

Did 17 miles yesterday felt pretty good, except the first 12.5 was with a group I offered to guide for the Soldier Field 10 mile race, and these folks were way slow, I didnt realize how painful running far below my own pace would be.

NICE!!!
I got a call from my brother over the weekend telling me I am replacing him in the White River 50, he blew out his hammies doing the Chukanut 50K in March and they are not healing. I just dont see that happening, a 50K maybe, but not a 50 miler.

Great Job again!

Very cool! If I did 50 miles around here, I'd probably get about 100' in elevation change.

As for me, just over 5 miles yesterday after work. I like to run at least 6 but I had taken about a week off of running and for some reason my back was killing me about halfway into it yesterday.
