I worked with the management company last year, and while that worked fine, I had great luck with my particular broker this year and the whole process was not the nightmare I anticipated.

A lot has changed since my first post in this thread...

I looked for roomates this weekend and think it is such a bad idea. I quickly determined that when u rent a room in someone's apartment, it seems like it is not your apartment (but theirs).

So i was speaking with my parents (who visit me often) and "we" decided that rather than my current studio, i should switch to a 1 bedroom apt. This is so that my parents can actually stay in my apartment when they visit, rather than stay in your choice of Times Square hotels. My parents would help me with the rent, if i end up paying more than my current apartment.

In any event WHO ARE SOME GOOD REAL ESTATE BROKERS IN MANHATTAN for rental apartments? I agree with what some of you said (particularly the guy from Stern.. you know who you are) about using a broker. I tried craigslist for a few days and i dont have the time or patience for that.

Thanks

Ive used citi-habitats.com, my broker was Eugine, he's a really good guy.

CL really is the best option, it has listings from a bunch of brokers plus owners, where you don't have to pay a fee.

The last rental broker I used was in 2003 - really wish I could remember or find her name but I can't find anything. Key is to tell them NOT to show you anything that doesn't fit your criteria - if they do, tell them again and firmly why it doesn't fit your criteria and if they screw up again, get another broker. Don't waste your time with someone who's not interested in doing any work for his fee.

I just signed for a new apartment and looked at places using 3 different brokers ... but 1 stood out above the rest and I ended up with one of her apartments. She was magnificent, really took the time to help me locate places in my price range and area specifications. PM me if you want her info.

also, you'll have no trouble with a 1-bedroom. I got a 1-bedroom for LESS than the studio that I got 12 months ago.

Manhattan prices suck...
Just bought a house in SI. Nice price, close to work... bit too many guidos, but I can deal with that.
