Just came back from checking out 5 apartments all over Manhattan through CL. Found 1 decent one, but thats it.

I had my hopes pretty high for a SoHo studio on Mott between Spring and Prince for $1500 all inclusive, but the studio was really really tiny. Damn that was really disappointing.

Found a decent one in the EV, but I plan on checking out some more Saturday.

I saw about 20 last month before deciding. Do you mean NC tiny or NYC tiny? About $50 /sq ft /yr is about right. Under $40 /sq ft/yr would be really quite cheap.

$1500 at that location is going to be very small by NYC standards.

Good question. It was the first studio I saw...so I can't base it on anything yet. It was pretty f'in small though, and one the first floor with no windows so quiet depressing.

Amazing location though.

Do you think I can live off on US$1800-S$2000/month in NYC?? I'm thinking S$500 for the rent plus the bills (?) A friend of mine lives in Jackson Heights so I'm thinking crashing at his place while looking for something decent. Moving is so so stressful!!

you will need many roommates with that budget. Most places in Manhattan are probably not options.

I don't live in NYC but Craigslist can be a good option for finding a roommate.

I was looking for roomshares near my client-site and found one that said

"Room for rent. On suite bath. I am a consultant for XXX firm. I am XX years old. I ask that you be around the same age and a professional."

Well I fit the description so I met the guy in a public area, we hit it off, have been roommates for two years now with no issues. The sad (or good, depending on how you look at it) part is is that we are now each others closest friends.

If you are young you have the benefit that are many non-creepy people in your exact situation.

I searched almost everyday for 3 months. Found a rent-stabilized one.
Bulletin boards at markets/stores can also reveal good opportunities.

I think you have some reading to do. Google "cost of living" and "New York City". Living in Chicago on that kind of money is a stretch.

I live at my parents' apartment on Central Park in the UWS. They've had it for years, but we barely lived there, as they live between Rome and LA. It's all mine now, lol. I go to college at Columbia, and I'll hopefully continue to live in New York after I graduate.
