General opinion on pinstripe vs solid navy/charcoal suits

Are pinstripe suits too flashy/modern for interviews or for college students in general? My friends tell me I should stick to solid navy/charcoal ones and leave the pinstripes to Wall St investment bankers. I find that I look good in pinstripe, but is it generally considered less traditional and more fashion-forward than a solid navy/charcoal suit?

Im probably the last one to ask about subtlety, but if its a quiet pinstripe, it should be OK - and the more narrow the stripes the better for you, Id think. Nothing too bold or wide.

However, a default solid blue or grey suit is an essential for you, and I would go with that before venturing out into a pattern.

Pin-stripes are fine for when you start work, but solids are probably a better choice for interviews.

A traditional navy or charcoal pinstripe is fine paired with a conservative shirt and tie, IMO. However, solids are always a safe choice.

If you're worried about looking like a Wall Street investment banker, there are parameters more important than the pattern. Pinstripe is fine. What's more important is the type of suit -- you want single-breasted, 2-piece.

A pinstripe can be more conservative than solid..but style, contrast, fabric all come into play. The bottom line for an interview is that you want the interviewer to concentrate on you not your clothes. Go with what you feel most confortable in. Any discomfort will be reflected -- albeit subtlely -- in your interview.
