I heard a story about a young fire-brand radical in the 1920' s, who went to Paris to become a taxi driver and live with the common people. It turned out that most of his close colleagues were Russian aristocrats and former officers. Well, the military mind-set is well-suited for driving a taxi, I suppose.
The Russian exile taxi drivers even had their own club/union. I know of a Russian count and former czarist secret policeman who later in life was a tremendous success as a department store Santa Claus. Tragi-comic.
