I only really get crap from one of my friends. It doesn't really bother me at all though as I don't take his opinion serious on anything but videogames and comedy. My little sister really likes that I'm into clothing and my older sister always just trys to find out how much I spent on stuff so she can try to embarrass me.

Priceless convo this evening with madre, who is most ardently anti-stylish-kohan family member. I was wearing a new pair of black 511s that I got today, and the following ensued:

Mom: What are those pants?
Kohan: They're Levi's 511. They're jeans.
M: Oh..
K: I'm stretching them out right now.
M: Oh, okay, it's just that I've never seen pants like that before.
K: They're.. umm... it's in style
M: Tight pants?
K: NO, like, just fitting--you know like the shape of--
M: Right. (wanders away)

What's your best comeback for the typical "What are you, gay?" reaction to the way you are dressed?

No, I get plenty of compliments. If you take crap, you're doing something wrong.

I don't know, there are some people who seem to think that anything outside of baggy pants and Nike dunks is weird, different, and generally doesn't look good. Though these are generally the type of people who wear sweats everywhere with flip flops and running shoes.

edit: Discuss!

unless you want to distance yourself from, i would just be honest and straightforward about it. and i would ask them to stop criticizing me and just accept me for who i am. thankfully, i do not have this problem with people that i love to hang out with.

I'm beginning to suspect that my mother has always feared I would turn out gay. This would explain a good deal of her prickly disdain for my interests in, and devotion to, fashion and style.

A little funny, when I think about it, but also rather not.

Damn maternal neurosis...

Generally, no. Actually, colleagues and friends who tell me I look "nice" or stylish, especially the ladies, show (or feign) interest when I then tell them about selvage or lasts or how I measure up a jacket for fit . I suppose they're attaching some substance to the look based on my rambling -- even though I'm no expert in any of these things.

Never been mistaken for teh ****, but used to get the occassional glance when I lived in the Yonge / Wellesley area of Toronto. Took these as a compliment.

Some people are just haters... getting hated on is no reflection on how you dress.

meh.... I'd only agree to the extent that an asshole hater may just fixate on your clothes because they're visible, but plenty of normal people are put off by what they see as an effort to show off, or to look much better than others around you. we call it style, they call it arugula-chomping elitism.

and I think we are all especially guilty of hating on people with bad steez. we may not do it to their faces but we certainly love doing it here....
