Differing fits in Levi 501s

Hey guys,

I recently bought my first ever pair of jeans*, Levi 501s from the store in downtown San Francisco. They are absolutely awesome, easily the nicest pair I've worn. In particular, they have a beautifully snug fit, but without any taper. It took me a while to break them in, but now they're super-comfy.

Last week I bought another pair of 501s, same size, different color, from the Levi store on Amazon.com. I figured I didn't need to try on an identical pair. These arrived and they fit .... differently. The waist is the same, but they're looser in the butt and thighs, don't hug my knees as closely, and generally feel noticeably "baggier", which isn't my thing. Even before shrinking/washing, my old pair fit much more closely. The new ones say "501XX" instead of "501" on the back tag.

What's up with this? How would I identify the exact cut/shape/model of my favorite pair so I can buy more?

(* weird as that may seem. I'm not from here)

Going to the same store and buying more? But if you are buying online it's always a gamble. That's because even in the same model they can fit different. Levi's sizes are always crazy when it comes to their jeans. That is why it's always good to try them on in the store before buying. When purchasing online buy from a store that got a great return policy.

Amazon got a great return policy hassle-free and you don't pay return shipping. Zappos is another store. Levi's.com is great as well but you have to pay for return shipping but you can always return at their store if you bought from online.

I wear Levi's 510 and I have them in sizes 28W, 29W, 30W and they all fit exactly the same yet the sizes are different. This is called vanity sizing.

XXs are shrink to fit.
Regular 501s are not.
Couldn't you just google this?
