I just bought a home that is in need of a bathroom make over. The bath is small, 8x4. I will be gutting it and am looking for ideas to redo it. The home is a 1948 cottage style about 1100 sf. Only one bath. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you are on budget, you might consider Christopher Lowell's book, You Can Do It! Small Spaces. We used this as a guide for some of our small late-1920s rental beach cottages in La Jolla. The cottages range in size from approximately 900 to 1,050 sq. ft. Lowell's ideas may not be everyone's cup of tea. Nevertheless, those ideas keep our cottages rented because the resultant designs are unique in the rental market.

We don't employ the ideas at home but our tenants love having something different from so many of the other available rentals on the market. We have no vacancy factor and a long list of would-be tenants. The book is worth thumbing through at you local bookstore. You may discover some inspiration. Who knows?

I'd go through old Sunset Magazines. They always seem to have articles on renovating old craftsmen style houses and creative ways to make the best of small spaces. Will you be doing the work yourself?
