Can the groom alone wear a tuxedo?

Hello,

I’m getting married this summer, and had planned to wear the standard black tuxedo. In fact, I’ve already purchased one. I figured I don’t get many chances to wear black tie, I want to have a traditional and timeless look for my wedding photos, etc., so I was excited about it.

That said, I’m starting to have second thoughts. Our wedding will begin at 5pm, at an elevated farm venue with a tent for the reception. “Garden Party” as the dress code for our guests, and I’ve told the groomsman to wear dark blue to navy two piece suits, with white shirts (I plan to provide ties for them). The bride is wearing a traditional white dress.

My question is, is it garish and grossly out of place for me to wear a tux as the groom in this case? As I said, I was looking forward to it before, but now I am wondering if I should just save the tux I bought for any future black tie events im invited to, and instead get a three piece navy suit or something like that. Cost and time are factors so I wish I had these thoughts earlier, but if I need to change course now is the time.

Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated! Thanks

My brother was the sole black-tie attired man at his wedding.

His logic was: I want to wear a tux, so I'm wearing a tux.

So he wore one.

While it's not technically "correct" to wear a tux to an event without a black tie dress code, if the event is YOUR celebration, you can wear what you like without much concern for dress code violation.

Thank you, I really appreciate your reply. Even though I think it may look a bit silly at times, I’ll probably stick with it.
