This is really the battle you need to stand firm on--especially because it relates directly to the rent/don't rent decision.

I was in a wedding this past weekend (great time, the ladies looked great) as a groomsman but unfortunately the bride insisted that we rent identical dinner jackets (the ceremony started at six). This was an especially unwise decision because the groomsmen ranged in shape from 5'5" to 6'9" both weighing roughly the same 200lbs and the rest of us in between.

Renting is a giant hassle. The mannequins will look great and the salespeople will say things like "when you rent from us it's like you're buying for a day" and "we'll make any and all alterations" but then when your event is days away they'll throw up their hands and roll their eyes when you try to demand proper fit.

Bottom line is that you and your groomsmen will look and feel better on the big day if you "allow" them to wear a dark suit that they own and fits them properly. If you need to compromise do so on the ties (so long as you can avoid this white/black funeral-like option). Remember that you're getting married--not opening an Italian restaurant.
