Welcome to the forum.  This is indeed a great place to learn from the pros in a gentlemanlike environment.

My first Alden purchase (a little over a year ago) was the Alden shell Color 8 Chukka.  While I love them, I find that the eyelets are not enough to keep my foot firmly fastened within the shoe.  That has not stopped me from wearing them weekly, but next time I will go for a six eyelet chukka.  If I had to do it over again, I would have definitely gone with the No 8 PTB.

Good luck and enjoy your visit to NYC.

2 eyelet cigar chukkas were my second purchase. I got epaulet's Brixtons in 8.5D and they fit very well, so I got the same size in the chukkas (both barrie) but they're much looser. I can't return them now, though. Would it be crazy to try to have someone put in an extra eyelet or two for additional support around the heel? Has anyone tried that?

Here are today's arrivals. Both on the grant last. I have (and love) the split toe in #8 already. Since I have trouble finding loafers that fit well, I ordered it in black shell as well. The #8 shoe is the identical shoe as the split toe, save for the split toe stitching.

Now that I see the black shell ones up close, I am on the fence. Was just thinking that if I am doing a loafer in black shell, I may as well do a tassel loafer or something a little dressier. Thoughts?

The #8s minus the split toe seem a bit dressier than my #8s with it. So, I think I can justify keeping them for sure. The black ones I am hemming and hawing about though.

I like them both and, my suggestion, if you can afford to keep both, I would. You are unlikely to wear the black loafer as often as the color 8, but you are likely to find it more versatile than you assume today.

Tassels are on the aberdeen so you may sacrifice fit. If both the ones in your possession (on grant) fit well, keep them both. Slip-ons are not as dressy as lace-ups whether they be tassels or split-toes (or otherwise); accordingly, the difference in the relative dressiness of the two slip-ons is minimal, IMO.

Black tassels are a good call as well.

Thank you, gents. I like them both, but definitely dig the #8s, both with and without the split toe, far more. I could keep both, but figure I should sleep on it. Good point about the difference in lasts - as a Grant last devotee...beggars can't be choosers.
