At least they know their target audience.

How is the new store? Downtown is really making an effort at vitalization.

I think your taste leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.

Now that's really appropriate, and it's an invaluable input to the thread. Seriously folks, I know Hermes ties are not very popular here, but if every time one talks about an item we don't love we feel bound to react ironically (or even worse), the whole SF is going to become pretty useless in no time.

What gets me scratching my head is that Hermes ties are not bad ties by any definition. They're just a different aesthetic. They're not the best made for ties with their styling, but they have styling you can't get anywhere else, and ties are one piece of clothing where styling is really a main concern no matter how many discussions we have about drape, knot and silk.

It's funny but I think the Hermes staff thought I was weird and surprised them by announcing a purchase. I had just come from meeting a senior lawyer in an office on the next block, so was in a blazer and a less formal woven. I had asked to try on the tie, so of course they said yes. I just couldn't get the tie on because I had never put on a tie so thin and with such a delicate feel in over a year. Since I wear much thicker ties, I had to retie the tie a couple of times until the length was right, then retie it again until I got a Windsor with an extra loop that satisfied me, since a four in hand with such a thin tie looked silly on me.

That said, I appreciated feeling the thinner silk as a change, and wouldn't mind having a couple of this sort of tie in a print I really liked to round out my own warrdrobe. The hate is just part of the SF bandwagon effect, since making fun of blue striped shirts and square toed Kenneth Coles is one thing, but making fun of the "banker uniform" even though a lot of well-dressed and prominent people wear Hermes ties is another.

Admittedly, perhaps there are jerks who think putting on a Hermes tie makes them stylish all by itself, but then you wonder why the hate is not similarly leveled against Vineyard Vines and Charvet printed ties. If a new poster came here and asked about thinner Italian shoes, he'd probably get a dozen snide stock answers telling him that English welted shoes are the best.

I enjoyed my visit, to be honest. I went in and browsed their ties, and a salesperson discreetly approached me to ask if there was anything in particular I wanted to see. I said I just wanted to browse as I had never had the chance to see their products up close. She then mentioned they had limited edition Wall Street ties, then backed off. The only other time someone interrupted me was to ask if I needed assistance, because I had been retying the same tie over and over again with a skeptical look on my face.

Many of us here strongly prefer wovens, but seeing all that lustrous silk on display was a fun experience. They had pocket squares spread out in glass cases, and I'd love to have some of THOSE to pair with my thicker woven sevenfolds, but I think they're even more overpriced than the ties. Seeing the scarves on display was fun too.

So, to sum up, the store wasn't crowded, the staff was wonderful, and the products were laid out nicely it was fun browsing. Plus, the novelty of buying a tie with bull prints outside the NYSE building was an indulgence, and I know my Dad had no photo with the real Wall Street bull.

The original bull sculpture is upstairs, outside the NYSE executive dining room. It's very cool.

I think what I don't like about Hermes ties is not the designs, which I don't mind, but the thinness. I think they make really bad knots because they are so insubstantial.

Good to hear the store is nice. Every time I think about getting a place down there, I am always turned off by the fact that there's really nothing down there. Supermarkets, etc. Maybe that will change.

I am not sure why you feel the need to justify your like of Hermes ties, Jose. I certainly don't mind thin ties and have no problem with all sorts of oddball items, but I still find Hermes ties to be really ugly looking and to lack a lot when it comes to good taste. There are a lot of things that I wear which others around here would not and have made fun of. Big deal. If you don't want peoples honest opinions don't ask questions. It is as simple as that. For what it is worth, I really dislike thicker ties like Carlo Franco and Charvet wovens.

If you read my original post, I was asking who had the tie or had seen it.

I think it's quite clear that Hermes ties are not a big favorite of mine. Nor am I justifying anything, I'm just reacting to the usual Style Forum crap being thrown around. Honest opinion is one thing, but nonsensical flaming is quite another.

You're a very good son. That is a very nice gesture on your part, and your dad should be proud of you. I hope he wears that here, and if I see a guy around here wearing that, I'd say hello.

Hermes ties have the misfortune of belonging to that category which all of us, in our shallower moments, love to hate: attire which people who don't know much about clothes think makes them sartorially brilliant and sophisticated.

Now, I'm not saying that that's a good reason for disliking them, and I'm also not saying that there aren't legitimate reasons for disliking Hermes ties, but I think we should acknowledge that this prejudice is a factor.

FWIW, I can generally take or leave Hermes ties, although I do enjoy when the more whimsical ones are combined with an otherwise severe outfit.

I suppose I'll be flamed for this, but I have a bunch of Hermes ties, as does my father--while I don't like certain patterns/motifs, I do like some of them. I have also inherited some handmedown single color Hermes ties that are great, not sure if they are made anymore.
