Regarding your other point, it's possible that he's simply a normal guy in terms of metabolism, but need I point out that the average man in the US is 20 pounds overweight? A combination of diet, cardio, and resistance training will help maintain a fit and toned physique and minimize the wild fluctuations in weight that you'll see with more traditional diet programs.

I wasn`t trying to suggest that he will get HUGE after only 6 months of weight training. I was just pointing out that gaining mass in general is not so good for clothes. Obviously that will not happen with just 6 months.

The average American man might be 20lbs overweight, but there are plenty of other countries in this world where men do not lift weights or do anything special, yet they are thin without fat. I will go further and say that this focus on weight training to lose weight or maintain a healthy, strong body, in general, is an American thing too, which I still quite do not understand.

Not saying it`s bad, but I just notice a lot more people pumping weights and running on the treadmill in America, compared to the other countries I visit.

I'm trying to resist eating a donut right now. It's really hard.

FWIW, I didn't eat anything 'till 4 PM today.

Maybe that is your problem!

#1 Donuts are probably the worst. That`s what you eat if you want to gain flab quickly.

#2 Not eating until 4pm is not healthy and is a quick way to make your metabolism go down the drain.

Make sure you eat breakfast in the morning, lunch in the afternoon, and dinner. That`s normal eating...then you can try all the multiple meals per day stuff, weights, cardio or whatever.

That is about the worst way to lose weight! Eat every few hours, just LESS. I'm sure you're about to get an earful for your starvation diet.........

Anyway, I useually eat a lean chicken salad for breakfast(kinda weird but it works for me) and one whole grain snack with yoghurt(120cal) between breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Dragon speaks the truth.

Not eating until 4pm is a surefire way to ensure that even if you're eating three pieces of lettuce and two carrots a day, you'll STILL get a gut....

Guys, drop it. This is just not gonna happen. Connemara would:

1. NOT engage in cardiovascular exercise/ weigh lifting / sports, at least not on a regular basis

2. NOT be able to stick to a quasi-healthy diet that limits alcohol intake, especially when school year resumes

3. MIGHT lose 5-10 lbs, and then pick them back up, and then some when summer is over. His "beer belly" would likely remain in place throughout the progress.

Seriously, the kid must have not read more than half of the overwhelmingly enthusiastic and helpful (for the most parts) responses. Per usual, attempting to give Connie life advice is nothing but a practice in futillity.

That would depend entirely on whether his roommate was his "workout" partner or not...

There's a number of reasons for that, many of which are cultural, ideal body image is clearly different here, and the sports that are popular chiefly feature a lot of muscle required, also most Americans walk less than people in other countries, so they need to exercise to get the same amount of exertion.

+1. I think that we look weirder/worse because of our over-lifting/training than our fatness compared to other cultures. YMMV.

Take Hollywood as an example, since it's a common reference point and about as "American" as you can get when talking about crass culture. Think of all the current actors who really wear their clothes well--even the ones with horrible taste in clothes, but who have bodies that make those horrible clothes look better than they should. I guarantee probably 90% of them, at least, do some serious weight training to maintain their physique. Lifting weights doesn't have to mean you get big, inflate like a balloon, and end up looking Hulk-ish; for one thing, that's a lot harder to do without getting fat than most people who don't lift realize. But if they have any desire to get toned and somewhat cut, most people are going to find that it's very hard to do without some resistance training. Even if that training is just bodyweight exercises and such.

I agree in some ways, though. I think it was j who said in another thread that some people seem to develop a sort of body dismorphic disorder when they lift a lot, where no matter how big they get--to the point where it's genuinely unattractive to most of the population--they still don't think they're "big enough", etc. Obviously, if you're lifting as a sport or really WANT to be huge, that's different, but I do think some guys overdo it. That said... spend two hours a random street in most of America, and you MIGHT see a couple guys who are overly bulky giants, but I guarantee you'll see hundreds of fat people.

I agree in that many somehow assume that lifting = steroid arnold. This is not remotely the truth.

For example, this is what a normal male typically looks who workouts with weight, is not fat, and takes care of himself.

*Keep in mind if this guy was to flex hard, yes, he would look huge too many, but human males don't go around doing this.
One of the consisentent comments I get when wearing suits is my posture/appearance compliments my overall look.

Exactly, a symmetrical physique think statue of david range (ie Pitt, McCounghay(sp) look pretty decent. The OLD joke was that Cary Grant could wear a burlap trash bag and look great.

Just as some women can never ben thin enough. I'd say it's more rare with men especially post 25. But it's so rare relative to the population as you say who look fat and unmasculine.
