I get that Tudor allows Rolex more flexibility interms of marketing and reaching out to a lower price point. However, while people are currently pleased with the Pelagos, Tudor has had some designs in the past that were not so great and which didn't garner lots of positive comments.I think having tudor allows rolex more flexibility in terms of marketing. As much as I complain that Rolex is lazy/boring, I also understand their conservatism is due in large part to the fact that they represent the gold standard of luxury watch making to the public at large (for better or worse). Any misstep carries the potential of ruining the brand (a la new coke), so deploying new ideas via the tudor route allows them to take risks, be bold, and test new ideas out without damaging the staid continuity of their established lines.
Just imagine if the pelagos was the updated submariner (minus the snowflake dial marker/hands)????
Tudor can do it precisely because Rolex can't
I actually like the fact that they rarely make changes. I think it just adds to it's ability to retain it's classic yet brand new look. The minor changes which they actually do make are topics of conversation amongst collectors, and I think it also helps it retain if not increase in value. If you bought one 30 years ago there isn't that many indicators that it isn't one which was bought yesterday unless you know what your looking for.I think having tudor allows rolex more flexibility in terms of marketing. Anyone here own (or handle) a Sea-Gull Tourbillon?
I'm thinking of getting a nice Chinese watch, and one of their tourbillons seems like a good candidate.
just thought i would add a quick picture of my birth year vintage Sub and daily wearer... 1970 5513
You can as long as it passes the pressure test. However I don't do this with any of my new watches so I see no reason to do it with my Red. Once the dial is ruined, there's no going back with a vintage watch especially when it's all original. That looks great!
A question to those of you with vintage Rolex sports watches: Can they still perform their intended role as a tool watch or do you have to baby it?
For instance, do you take it swimming?
I tend to baby my watches anyway. As DDD suggested, you can swim with it as long as you get it pressure tested. However, if you have something that is in great shape and appreciating in value why risk it.A question to those of you with vintage Rolex sports watches: Can they still perform their intended role as a tool watch or do you have to baby it?

Yikes!!! You paid for someone to spray paint your Sub and added bezel with polished coal! The PVD is ok, but the bezel is a real eye sore. Get a normal bezel for it and get rid of the wannabe pimp bezel.new piece this week:
non-current model Rolex Sub, custom PVD coating and black diamond encrusted bezel. A stark departure from my typical tastes but it's actually more subtle than the description would suggest.
I have ordered an Everest Horology strap for it and have a red second hand lined up but i havent pulled the trigger on that yet.
