My completely uneducated guess is $6,300.

£1k to £2k in London, depending on pattern, size, and age.

No ******* way did you pay $5/6k for that.

Well, you can see the pattern. The size is 280 x 180cm and the age is about 30 years. Is there something that makes you think it is worth less than others are guessing?

Is there an online London-based source for Beni Ourain with the prices you're talking?

Ironically, SH, I think you have actually moved the meter in terms of Foo's thought process. A very slight change seems to be registering.

You have too much ego caught up in ths to admit it.

Oh please. One thing SH does not contribute is anything to think about.

Honeslty, your ignorance of contempory modern design is what makes you think the other things we've picked out somehow out-of-line.

I say so when I think you are on the right track. I haven't changed my mind in thinking that this rug does not belong in the context you intend to use it in, but the rug itself is good.

There are few contemporary designers doing things that I enjoy in the way of furniture, that does not mean there are none. In the way of architecture and interior design I think we are in a fantastic era and the work being produced is very exciting.

I say so when I think you are on the right track as well, you just have a very difficult time with differences of opinion. I haven't changed my mind in thinking that this rug does not belong in the context you intend to use it in, but the rug itself is good.

And what context would that be?

I'm in no way an expert, but I know several people with Beni rugs, and I have browsed a bunch of shops selling them myself (I was planning on buying one about a year ago). Obviously I wouldn't be able to guarantee their authenticity, or whether these particular rugs are 10 or 30 years old.

I don't know of an online retailer, but a quick google search revealed several dealers selling purportedly 'antique' Benis at $1k-3k, which tallies precisely with my expectations. Again, it is possible they are not the legitimate article.

By the way, I think you made a good choice with this rug in the context of your apartment. It will take the edge off some of your furniture which I find a bit antisceptic and gelid; and it should complement that nebula table, the Chair Ones, and your marble tabletop. The overall effect, although not to my taste, will look quite impressive and certainly coherent.

Unless there's something about that particular example that makes it exceptional and which I'm just not picking up on , I'd guess $1500-2000--maybe more if it has to be shipped a great distance.

this is no fun given google's "search by image" feature.

I didn't bother looking to see if such a thread already exists, but I'm too lazy and I assume if it did, it would be somewhere on the front page. So, here it is: a thread for posting pictures of rugs you like and discussing them.

Now, for some gratuitous, self-interested content:

914508

914510

914511

This is a genuine 25 to 30-year-old Beni Ourain. All undyed wool (both warp and weft). No damage or stains. Fringes are in excellent shape. The size is approximately 6 x 9 feet (or 180 x 280cm, for the Europeans out there).

At least, that is what the dealer tells me.

For the moment, let us assume that everything I'm told is correct. What can you tell about the quality of the rug and how would you value it? What other information would need to get a good handle on the price?

Okay, now, for you experts: is there anything about the rug that strikes you as suspicious?
