As an Asian myself, I don't think what they do is wise because many of the people who use LV want to look different from what they are. This means that seeing the model in blue eye, blonde, and western look would give them the delution of them being breakaway and be unique from other people around them.

...Are you kidding? All the asians I know are wearing LV because they want to fit in/ball out with all the OTHER asians who are wearing LV (all of which have more money than taste). Where it all started, I'm not sure. But nobody is wearing LV because they want to look white. They're wearing it because they want to look "ballin' ".

He's holding bags millions of yellow people aspire to own, that sorta changes the situation, doesn't it? Sure its just stitched dead cow carcasses but hey, only idiots think the value of a piece of clothing (or a job) is actually intrinsic to the item or job in question.

So you're implying that Asians have no confidence in themselves and are ashamed of their own race? And by acquiring luxury products like LV they'll be more western and sophisticated?. Hogwash! Emerging luxury consumers want quick fix to wealth projection. Be it monogrammed bags etc, basically anything loud and against the StyleForum consensus. I have to admit, many cultures still have that "Caucasian" ideal. For them it's "the face" of success and wealth.

I'm glad LV got an Asian model... I believe most asians that think they are stylish are mostly brand-whores. They look for labels and logos more than substance to project a certain image of wealth and class... As most SF members know, true wealth and class are mostly inconspicuous. Most people probably don't know that a solid coloured cashmere sweater cost more than their LV-studded bag. Subtlety=class and sophistication.

It's still true even if it's difficult to completely understand the cultural rational reasoning behind this state of affairs...

Old nations such as England,France and Italy for example, have an extended history of developing fashion and socio-cultural trends during the last hundreds of years...

Colonialism reinforced this dominance by promoting the European way of life all around the world..

It might a few decades before the emerging nations start imposing their cultural references as strongly as the caucasian ones...

The Russians buy LV, does it mean they want to be blue eye, white and western looking?

The Asian market is massive for brands such as LV...

Is it surprising for them to have an Asian model representing them?

I think this is correct. Furthermore, LV clearly does not need a new plan for marketing their products in Asia.

Maybe this is a strategy to exoticize their brand in the west, where the LV brand may have acquired some undesirable associations with suburban JAPs and other unfashionable demographics.
