Of course. Another great WW2 movie.

Thought of it last month when I toured the Townsley Battery which supported two 16-inch guns capable of hitting a target 25 miles out to sea.

Watched Tower Heist last night. It was totally preposterous, but a fun way to spend a Friday night.

grr, Warrior kinda sucked too
Today I'm gonna watch a real movie, Stalag 17. Hopefully that will break this crap streak

What? Man I really liked that movie.

S17 is a fantastic movie. William Holden at his best.

The Warriors > Warrior.

No it isn't, and I can DIG IT!

With very few exceptions, pretty much all action movies made prior to 1980 suck. Guns is not one of the exceptions.

I would also include "The Wild Bunch" in that.. Considering its place in cinematic history regarding realistic violence etc., I'd call it an action film.

The Warriors > Warrior.

I haven't seen a lot but I can comment on the pieces of John Wayne war movies I saw on AMC over memorial day weekend and they were ridiculous. Action is definitely a genre where the improvements of certain special effects in the early 80's/late 70's go a long way.

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I seem to recall a very similar gut reaction.

Wayne is better represented in westerns, but highlights of his war movies are The Green Berets, Sands of Iwo Jima and The Longest Day. You need to see the entire movie though.

You have to watch older movies in the context of when they were made and judge them based on whether they achieved what they set out to accomplish. Historical importance also plays a role. Thus, while Jackson's King Kong is a great movie with a very believable ape, Cooper/Schoedsack's King Kong is the better movie.

I love it when 6 years later he shares the iconic scene with Schwarzenegger in Commando:

I can appreciate many movies in their context. For me, however, there are still a lot of old movies that many experts just love that I cannot stand. Many pre 80's action movies fit this bill. In all seriousness, Sly Stallone and Arnold did more for the action genre over the course of five years, than all of Hollywood did in the previous 50.

All are very watchable on their own. The Defiant Ones is not quite perfect for The Getaway, but I was thinking about it today. TDO is better paired with Cool Hand Luke. If you haven't seen that yet do so immediately.

The Great Escape is a bloody great movie. Also consider Bridge on the River Kwai as a perfect companion to TGE. Or maybe Stalag 17.

Moonrise Kingdom- Hmm, not sure what to make of it. Story was slow, acting not so great. It will probably be better the second time around, but definitely not as epic as Life Aquatic or Royal Tenenbaums. I felt like this was the movie that should have been in between Bottle Rocket and Rushmore.

I had a bit of an odd experience at the theater. There were about 20 of us there, and right behind me were 3-4 old people who kept chewing their popcorn loudly, making crazy old people comments, and laughing at every single thing that happened in the movie. So, I got up and moved down to the third row about 15 minutes into the movie. When I got up to leave at the end, they were craning their necks to see me, perhaps worried, maybe insulted. Are people really that clueless?
