Buttoning only the bottom button on a 6X2 DB is so long-established that I can hardly claim it as sprezzatura. I do it because I think it appears less "buttoned-up" than closing the middle or middle and bottom buttons, both of which are also long and widely accepted. No one has ever mentioned it, but I wear my clothing in a fairly relaxed cut, which I find in fact relaxing; and I think the longer, looser roll of the lapel when the coat is closed at the bottom button, is in keeping with that relaxed look.





Fred's may be a 6X1 (his DBs often had the so-called keystone button placement that allows the coat to be closed only at the bottom button), but the idea is the same.
