dry skin FFFFFUUUUUUUU

the backs of my hands look like they'd fit right in on abe vigoda lately. my skin's so dry that my knuckles look like stone and are splitting and cracking, sometimes bleeding. it looks gross and hurts like a motherfucker.

no matter how much lotion i slather on them, it doesn't seem to help aside from maybe 10 minutes. i've had dry skin in the winter before but it has NEVER been like this.

any tips or shit i should be doing to help the situation?

If they are splitting and bleeding get some hydra-cortisone(?)/excema(?) cream from your doctors. Neutrogena hand cream (the original greasy one) is good too - slather on lots prior to bedtime and sleep with cotton gloves on.

See a dermatologist. I tend to have very dry hands (no where near as severe as yours) and I use Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve. Works for me.

Aveeno intense relief hand cream works well for me

Almond oil FTW. Seriously... try it out before going the pharmaceutical route. It worked wonders for my son's skin - his eczema disappeared within a few weeks of applying almond oil. You can get it in the bulk section of a nature foods store or some place like Whole Foods Market.

For dryness that has resulted in cracking, you need something more than lotion. I have to wash my hands, seriously, about 40 times a day and use either a canister of 100% shea butter or Aquafor. They're both greasy, but they absorb into the skin after about 5 minutes. You really need something that heavy duty for what's going on with you. I've tried Bag Balm, but it smells pretty strong and doesn't absorb into the skin. Also, for the areas that have cracked, I'd rub a little antibiotic ointment on them.

Get yourself some Aquaphor. It's only about $6.00, but it'll help a lot.

Sounds like it could be eczema. I would go see a derm if I were you. Also, what are you using to wash your hands? That could be compounding the issue.

Sounds like you're getting ashy. Happens to a lot of people in cold weather especially for those who wash their hands a bunch. Just get some kind of nice thick moisturizing cream. I've been a little ashy lately too because i kept forgetting to moisturize my situation enough

This time of year I use Aveeno moisturizing lotion after I shower. It works well.

Oil on the skin to moisturize the skin, then Vaseline on top of that to keep moisture from leaving the skin is the best combo, not that it will be comfortable or anything. Almond oil is nice, if I remember, this is what they put on David Blane's hands when he was in a glass sphere filled with water for days so that his hands wouldn't rot off.

For a long term fix, have a humidifier in your bedroom. It's an often overlooked skincare measure.

yeah...this is way beyond ashy. i've never had anything like this happen before, especially on the backs. anyways, took some advice and got this burt's bees shea butter/almond oil "hand repair" cream and it's working like a motherfucking CHAMP so far. my hands have been normal looking for 3 hours and running. thanks for the input.

Drink water...don't wash or bathe in super-hot water...use quality moisturizer.

dexpanthenol is what you need

beeswax based stuff is great. seriously, you could also use sno seal (the stuff people around here use for leather waterproofing) it's beeswax and other conditioners and it keeps my hands from ashy splitting dryness.
