My thoughts:

1. Based upon what I've read here for well over a year indicates that the McAllister (which I own in bourbon) is a shoe that's far too informal and flashy to be worn in an interview, especially for a conservative environment like you described in your post. Honestly, I still don't understand this - I don't work in the industries you describe but essentially every single time I've interviewed someone their physical appearance is terrible and they wear Sketchers for shoes (and they usually are not in good condition). If I interviewed someone in a nice pair of Strands or Macs which were well-maintained I would think positively about it ("This person is conscious about how his appearance impacts his brand and therefore my brand. He believes wearing nice shoes and maintaining them well is important." Why would I have a negative reaction to wingtips?).

2. Based upon similar questions asked by others I believe most would recommend the Park Ave. but I agree with you that it looks too plain (all of my AEs are more on the flashy casual side). I have a problem spending $300+ on a pair of shoes I'll wear only once in a while. Perhaps the Fifth Ave. is a better solution.

3. Either way, I'd go for brown instead of black. Brown seems to pair well with a charcoal or navy suit and is a more versatile color for other wearings.

4. I'm not a fan of black Strands or Macs. To me, the broguing (sp?) of the shoe is less visible because you're looking at "black holes" against black leather. I think that's why the walnut Strand and Mac is so popular - the broguing really pops against the color of the leather.

Thank you for the excellent feedback and all the great points, Scotty. As you mentioned, I agree that the Fifth Ave may be a better solution, but unfortunately that isn't an option for me at this time. In that case, I suppose I should start with the Park Avenue and go from there.

Nick has my burgundy Patriot loafers right now. Originally I was going to do the Dainite but the more I read about them being slick on tile floors I eventually changed my mind. The quote I had for Dainite was $155 and because I wanted to change the welt too it was $40 on top of that. I ended up going with JR soles and new welt done in the Alden antique edge finish for $165.

I totally trust B. Nelson with my shoes, IMO go with what you really want. I called AE recrafting about 3 hours ago for another pair of shoes and yes you are limited in options. The ones that I called AE about today are going to Nick also.
This sounds about right. I got the quote for $155 plus an extra $50 or so for the midsole, plus an extra $40 for the heel (I was thinking of converting my gumlite-soled trickers, so Nick would have to add the heel). I ended up keeping the gumlites.

110 was me eyeballing based on their quotes on their website, I havent gotten a response yet. Looks like I will be going through AE then. Now that I have another pair of shoes to put in rotation and will likely acquire a third soon, the soles probably wont wear out as fast.

Strands with chinos and trousers, the Alt Wien with jeans!

Though I don't own the Al Wien and would never likely trade in my cordovan Strands, one of my favorite shoe models.

I only ever wear my Strands with jeans, or dark cords, but they're in walnut calf. I also concur with the other poster that said the Alt Wien's medallion is too small.

Something about brogue balmorals makes the shoe sexier, if not a bit less convenient to get on and fit into (especially with wide feet and high insteps).

Update on the Bourbon Dalton seconds I bought during the Father's Day sale:

AE offered me a refund for the heel, although by accepting, I'll have no choice but to buy full price or wait for another sale. Contemplating buying the Shreeveport while it's on clearance, or saving up brownie points with the wife to splurge for a pair in Cordovan.

Yikes, in a little too high up on that list. Time for some time off.

^^ I'm surprised I have that many posts in this thread, actually.

Easy. I'm on here waaaay more than I should be. But geez...when I see it spelled out like that.... I may need to take a break.

Jesus God, apparently I'm posting like three times a day in this thread.  I really need to get some work done.

Damnit, all of a sudden this turned into an intervention.

Keep posting.  I'm trying to stay out of the top 5.

Right?

Crap! There I go again!

I don't think there is an issue with being in the top 5 as long as it takes more than a couple of months to accomplish it.

LoL. You guys do post a lot! I probably would have close to the most if they have a photograph count. Here and on Alden. I enjoy your conversations even if I sometimes have to just observe and play catchup.

I love my Strands. My Walnut Shell Strands are probably my favorite of all my shoes still. But given the fact that he doesn't wear suits often, I would go with the Alt Wien. Hope you hopped on that pre-order as they are gone for a while.
