There should be 3 notches on each strap, should help adjust the fit.

Right, but like most of you I am particular about fit. I would like to "fill out the shoe" or else I notice a ton of creases. I would like to use the middle hole on the strap so the strap doesn't look long and sloppy. Crazy i guess.

Just bought my first real shoes 2 weeks ago and fell in love.  Fifth Aves.  Today I hit the seconds sale for the Boston's @ $160 and the MacNeil Rough for $130.  The MacNeil Brown Roughs are no longer available on the website (?).  They look like a great casual shoe.

My experience with the Boston: I tried it on in store, liked it, liked the fit, purchased. I wore them once and they were the most ill-fitting, uncomfortable shoes I'd ever walked in. I ended up getting rid of them.

From what I understand, technically those are not balmorals, but don't know if siniquezu was looking for Suede balmorals or just Oxfords.
The Quintons are suede oxfords too.

From what i understand technically they are balmorals. :slapfight: Oxford / balmoral refers to the same thing, a dress shoe with closed lacing. Both acceptable terms when referring to this style... :teach:

Maybe you meant to say blutcher / derby, with would be a different style shoe.

I have a dilemma. I need (well maybe want is a better term...) a longwing or wingtip to add to the rotation. I actually like the non sleek Macneil and had my heart set on my first shell shoe. So I had a local AE shop order in a pair in 11D to try on but they didn't fit, too snug. So I had him order an 11E in burgundy shell and for ***** and grins I had him order the Williams in 11E as well so I could compare the two.

I'm wondering which would give me more mileage. Note, I have the cabernet brown Tresana so I have a sleek brogue shoe for business dress. I find the Tresana doesn't work that well with casual attire. A shoe like the Kenilworth, OTOH does double duty quite well and since I travel twice a month it works well for me (trips are typically 1-2 nights). Therefore I can bring just one pair of shoes for business attire during the day and chinos/denim at night.

For this reason, the Macneil seemed like the perfect choice. It's not sleek at all so it will work well with both business and casual attire. However, the leather on the new Independance Line really is nice but I wonder if the dark brown Williams is just too similar to the cabernet brown Tresana and I'm better off with the Macneil.

Any thoughts?

The independence collection details are similar to the Seven collection, so you should start there. But you might just be happier with a shell Macneil, something you hadn't tried before. Pending proper fit that is, good luck friend :D

Williams is on the 2-222 last, right? So narrower and sleeker looking, I guess. Having said that, I find something really cool, on the border of business and casual, and sort of retro-looking about the MacNeil. I think if it were me I'd go for the MacNeil, and save the Independence for something dressier - like the Jefferson.

Of course, I can't wear the 2 last, so my decision is a lot easier than yours!

Oh, and the availability of shell on the MacNeil is cool, too!

That's exactly what I like about the MacNeil and why it was my 1st choice. The Macneil is not at all sleek, very old school gun-boatish, in shell and unlike anything else in my rotation. However, once I got a good look at the Williams I realized it's a fantastically crafted shoe. It is on the 2 last and I have no idea how it fits. I figured if I need an E in the Macneil's 7 last, I might as well go for an E on the Williams.

However...as JubieSpiegel pointed out, it's quite similar to the Tresana while the Macneil is as different from the Tresana as you can get. The more I think about it, the more the shell macneil seems like the right choice.

If you get to try on the Williams in E, please let us know how it fits. I'm curious if I could wear the 2 in a wider width (never tried it).

Just from my experience, a pair of Richmonds on the 7 last (albeit, quite worn when I acquired them) in E was a bit too wide for me, where as my van Ness (bought brand new) in the 2 last fits very well with E width, though it is a bit tight in the toe box.

Be happy to.

Thanks for the info.

Has anyone used Obenauf's Heavy Duty? Any idea how it compares to Venetian Shoe Cream?

Obenauf LP is a great product and I use it regularly on my Wolverine 1K boots in CXL. I personally limit my Obenauf use to pull-up leathers only as once you apply the LP, you'll never be able to get much of a shine. For a casual boot like the 1K that's just fine. The Bayfield's lugged sole make me think its a casual boot as well so perhaps Obenauf would be fine. It will certainly increase water resistance but will also slightly darken the leather. If you ever want to get a shine, skip the LP.

It's appealing to me to put on my Bayfields because I actually use them like boots--I ride my bike in them, get caught out in the rain, etc. Guess I could just order 32oz of Venetian.. http://www.foresupplyco.com/product...on_E_7FC0718FF8E7E8AA12E847B8D512F0752581A583
Venetian Shoe Cream is good stuff. Nick Horween uses and recommends it himself, btw.
