True, the J. Crew might be too pricey for getting dirty and working in. You can get a decent, new Army field jacket in drab olive for around a third of the J. Crew price. Plus, I believe the real deal also comes with a removable cold-weather liner.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to order that j.crew fatigue jacket.

Robert,

When you were at the store, did you check out the utility jacket at all? It looks pretty similar to the fatigue jacket but a bit shorter. I might try that one instead.

I can't believe you guys looked at that Belstaff, then recommended the fatigue jacket. Are your eyes broken?

The fatigue looks awful. As if he's out in a rainy desert with a swag on his back, excessive facial hair, no fingernails a cork hat and a water bladder. The Belstaff is classy.

I agree - have you seen the Wings + Horns MK-2 jacket? If you can track one down from the spring-summer season it's great. I love mine.

I have the utility jacket, too. Utility jacket is shorter, thinner, fits more like a denim jacket or a Barracuta. Great jacket for spring/warm weather. Color is darker than the fatigue, more brownish-olive.

The slanted pockets aren't as obvious when the coat is on, contrary to the way the model pix look.

that j crew jacket is a horrible suggestion dude. he wants something that will do well in the rain - that jacket will not. j crew stuff is also not particularly well made and has no place in an actual working environment.

look at a waxed cotton piece from rag & bone or barbour/belstaff. if you have some time and cash, check out a MTM leather from aero.

I think that it depends on the time of year, but in the FW and early spring, I've found that my Woolrich Woolen Mills Maine Guide jacket is the most versatile. The black melton wool goes will most outfits, and the 4+1/2(pen) pockets and internal pouch pockets let you carry day to day items well. The short shawl collar can be worn up or down. Also, it is surprisingly compact, and wrinkles fall out a lot more easily than on a cotton jacket.

honestly I think a WWM jacket would be destroyed in any serious work situation, workwear roots or no. I think he should focus on something seriously heavy duty.

What sort of work are we talking about - I've cleared brush and chopped and hauled wool in my EG and WWM stuff. I have an olive EG FW06 Olive melton Engineer's jacket that is the warmest, toughest coat I've every owned, from a real workwear company or not.
