Having just had the handle go on my third cheap briefcase in two years, I'm in the market for a tough leather bag. Looking at saddleback Leather reviews seem a bit mixed and prices a bit high, so I'm seriously considering customhide - probably the Large Scholar.

Does anyone have any photos of their bags in Whiskey or Brown after a year or so's use? I'm torn between the two.

Any feelings on how tough they are - I frequently stick a bottle or two of wine and a few groceries in bags on the way home from work.

Thanks in advance

I'm stongly leaning towards buying a customhide bag in the near future. So, I'm very interested in any opinions on their bags as well.

I bought a weekender from Custom Hide a few years ago:

http://www.customhide.com/weekender_whiskey_back.html

I probably use it once a month. It's a study, reliable bag. I will say that the zipper pulls have bent, but that's probably because I really stuffed the bag full on my recent trip to the UK.

My only other complaint is the velcro on the handle. While out of place, it's at least functional. Had I known, I would have asked them to use metal snaps instead.

Here are a few shots of my new Walden bag. I've not had it a year yet but it's tough as hell and I'm sure it will be in great shape for years to come.

I purchased a weekender, and it never sees the light of day b/c my filson has better construction & better materials.

Their warranty statement suggests that they really stand by their product... http://www.customhide.com/lifetime_warranty.html

The only other one I've seen like that is Briggs and Riley, and while I swear by them, the bags they have aren't nearly as attractive.

Tumi and Hartman don't have warranties like this... I don't know these guys, but it takes balls to put out a warranty like they have -- good indicator of their standards

Sorry about the cruddy cell phone pic, but it's all I have in the office. Here's my 1945 in whiskey, it's about two years old now. I carry my MacBook in it, and it's constantly stuffed full of books and paperwork. Tough enough for me, and I'm not particularly gentle with it.

Tusting's warranty strikes me as having more loopholes than customhide... sounds like you'd be on the hook for some nickel and diming if a buckle or something broke

Thanks the 1945 looks nice how strong does the lock ?seem Either adding a lock to a large scholar or getting a 1945 made with deeper compartmentss is tempting. Do they generally charge much for customization?
