I just returned from a business trip to Newport Beach and Laguna. This was the first time I'd been anywhere in California other than LA, SF or SD.

I didn't have much free time, other than one afternoon spent at a place called Fashion Island, where there's a disappointing Neimans, loads of kind of cheesy Tommy Bahama-type places, and one rather interesting mens' store called Gary's. I have to admit that I rather liked Gary's; classic but a bit ecclectic in some areas. What's the story on this store? Are there other locations, is it well thought of? Can they do much business when every guy I saw on the street was wearing flip flops? ;-)

i like Gary's at fashion island. they have a decent shoe department with some higher end mantellassi, gravati, cole haan, and ferragamo. i do admit, some of their high end cole haan looks pretty good.
they have an excellent collection of belts, socks, ties, and other accessories, but they have an outlet in Tustin that i heard is really great as well.

Welcome to Cali. I live in LA and when wear jacket and maybe a tie to a party or an art opening and people ask, 'Why are you so dressed up?"

The Tommy Bahama-vibe is very Orange County Casual. I wonder how in-store sales will drop with the decline of the housing market in OC and how the deep the correlation will run.

Agreed, they had a very nice selection of Isaia ties, and the shoes ranged from conservative Aldens to higher end Italians . . . not completely my cup of tea, but I think it was pretty well thought out, especially for the venue.

Gary's is very highly regarded on the fora and annually makes Esquires list of top men's stores in the US, FWIW.

Gary's Rack in Tustin sometimes has some good deals, though I've only visited once and all I found were several pairs of socks.

Others who live in the area can fill in details.

you'll probably have better luck at south coast plaza, which is often considered the top shopping destination in southern california. in newport beach and laguna you wont find much outside of resort wear.
