Tailor in Hanoi - any recommendations?

I am looking for a recommendation for a tailor in Hanoi. I do not plan to have a suit made (although I would consider doing so if I received a strong recommendation) - only pants and perhaps some shirts.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

no recommendation but I have been told it's a great place to get a MTM suit.

you coming to Saigon as well?

Despite spending a lot of time up there, I cant really help you with Hanoian tailors, Saigon I know a lot better.

BTW, you may as well make a suit just for the fun of it, you probably wont spend more than $100 or $150 on it if you just want to try a guy out....

No time in Saigon this trip. I am reluctant to experiment with getting a suit made unless I am reasonably confident it will turn out well, since I've already got one on order from W.W. Chan, owing to a previous leg of my trip.

m@T, how do I tell a tailor I want my jacket to be canvassed, not fused?

Mike, you might want to try out my tailor Duc Nhuan on 37 Hang Dau. I got my shirts and pants made here and it's pretty decent. The price is very reasonable, 200000VND for a shirt and 350000VND for a pair of pants (lots of fabric to choose from). He can do canvassed suits for you; the term canvassed in Vietnamese is "lược canh tÃ³c".

If you need a translator i'll be happy to help. I'm going back to the US next Friday though. When are you going to be in Hanoi?

Forgot to mention one pet peeve about the shop I recommended, he WON'T fix your shirt after it's made. The thing is you can request anything here without him telling you that your style's tasteless like other tailors in Hanoi. He's from Saigon, btw (M@t, you know him?)

metkirk, that's really generous of you. I am in Hanoi at this very moment. I am here all day tomorrow, in Halong Bay on Tuesday and most of Wednesday, and back in Hanoi for Thursday and early morning Friday. I will try out your recommendation and, if a translator is needed, perhaps call on you.

I found him, although it turns out that there's two streets by that name in Hanoi! (Naturally, he's on the second of them that I visited - for the benefit of future readers, the one by the lake.) I ordered an overcoat and two shirts, for US$150. I was not thrilled with the selection of overcoat fabrics - the colours were weird, and the fabrics were generally too light, and too rough - but couldn't resist the pricing. I'll be back on Wednesday afternoon for a fitting, and will post regarding the results.

The price is very good - but, I should add, no better than Shenzhen. I mention Shenzhen because I had my favourite pair of chinos copied there with tremendous, unexpected success - the copies are much nicer than the originals, in terms of both fabric and construction, and cost only about US$25 all-in, on a super-rush (4-hour turnaround) basis. My wife and I were very surprised. And, unlike here in Hanoi, there was vast choice in terms of fabric. Unless this overcoat turns out to be amazing, I suspect Shenzhen will be my first choice for truly discount tailoring.

Shenzhen is a lawless little place in a "Special Economic Zone" of mainland China, about an hour by train from Hong Kong. In Shenzhen is a huge, crazy mall called Lo Wu Commercial City, on the fifth floor of which are about 200 tailors (plus a massive fabric market). No one speaks English. There is no website. Good luck!
