Newbie Question:

What is the deal with pointy shoes? Are they good style or just fashionable? Will guys be wearing them in 5 years?

I just read the shoes chapter of Style and the Man, and it seems that this (pointyness) is an Italian style of shoe. Narrow shoes are meant to give the illusion of length and thus an overall tall and thin appearance. However, it seems that every guy and his uncle is wearing these overly (IMO) pointy shoes. And the guys Im talking about seem to be 'trendy', thus leading me to believe that this is a fad.

Can anyone shed light on this? I dont seem to remember these styles ever being prevalent in the past.

where is this catching on? I thought sqare toes were still cool with the trendy group.
I have been wearing Pointy shoes for about a year now, stole the style from the streets of Shibuya, but long pointy shoes have been cool in Japan and China for some time now.

This sort of ****'s been big with the type of guy who has a luxurious pony tail and works at Sephora (yadadamean?) for years.

^ Good point.

That being said, how can I tell what the proper shape of a shoe is given my body type, size, style and fit of clothes?

Are there guidelines here or something you just have to have a feel for?

I imagine everyone has their own personal taste in this department, but what are the general rules here?

I must admit, I am a big fan of the "sleeker toe". Funny thing is, I had the hardest time finding anything "pointy" in Italy. Granted, I was in southern Italy so maybe they're behind the times.

I've been pondering the same thing, is the sleeker toe timeless? What did James Dean, Jimmy Stuart, Danny Kay, Humphrey Bogart wear? My feeling is a more timeless style would be that of Alden or Allen Edmunds. The toe isn't square and it's not pointy....rather inbetween and dull.

What do you guys think? Is that sleek Paul Smith brogue I've been lusting after going to be out of style in 5 years? Get Smart, any input?

Hahaa I'm serious, I would probably get anything in that style from him. I have a pic saved and I hate/love looking at it.

That PS shoe is relatively classic, actually. That's one thing I admire about Paul Smith - his stuff is unusual, fun, sometimes a bit out there, but never looks like it's going to look really dated at some point. Partly because he chooses classic shapes and cuts, and partly because he doesn't follow trends much, so even if someone might be able to pick it out as a PS piece, he won't be able to say exactly when it was from based on some horrible lapels or something.

"The Prince Regent, near Les Halles, had been in business for a century... You couldn't hope for better. A lifelong reputation for ferocious pointed dress shoes... they were known as "duckbills." Your toenails are driven into your flesh, the man of fashion is a cripple!"
