This forum is full of insecure salesmen who labor under the fantasy that carrying a briefcase makes them look important. It doesn't. Nobody cares how you transport your stuff to work. If a backpack is the only thing that works with your back, then use a backpack. There are specific brands mde for people with back problems, I'd try one of those.Originally Posted by JakeLA

Would a soft/hard case with an optional shoulder strap (to use when carrying heavy stuff) suit the OP? e.g. Soft bags from Crumpler

I think it will damage it. Weight applied on pretty much the same area on the shoulder and with strap constantly rubbing at it. Not a suit, but I have ruined merino jumpers with bag straps. That is why whenever I wear a suit, I shorten my bag's strap and carry it in my hand. So if you see some guy in a suit on the street in the conservative business dress carrying a shoulder bag that way... it's probably me
Back problem guy: like said before, use a wheelie case. Problem solved.

I believe it needs to be nice quality leather without too much stuff going on in front (pockets etc.) Visible zippers are also undesirable. To be honest, I haven't really seen one that I think would work (however, I haven't really been looking).
Anyway, Saddleback makes one, but it might look a little on the rough side.
You could also try and pull off the Palmer and Sons backpack
The brown one here also looks quite nice, but I have no idea what brand it is: http://hubpages.com/hub/-Leather-Backpack

Even if you only had one arm you could still use that to hold a nice briefcase or sling a leather messenger bag. IMO both far better options, even when going for a more casual look.Originally Posted by Blurv

I always get pilling on the lower back of my shirts after wearing a back pack with them a couple of times. I'm not sure if the same will happen with a suit jacket, but it's definitely something to avoid.

How is sporting a messenger bag (satchel to be more specific)?
This isn't mine, but one of the top images from Google. It looks similar, not identical. Also the strap isn't leather, which makes it look more casual unfortunately. It's not a match made in heaven with suits, but I was wondering what the general consensus is.

Very true - so if you do it, get a cool looking back pack, something technical and sporty to "clash". If its "wrong" then do it aggressively.
When I travel to Europe on business, I often take a backpack - an older Kelty Blanca 2000.

I am in my 20's and am generally clueless but I agree that a backpack is not good... but, I will also say that I have worn a backpack (
) that is kind of boring/sporty (looks like this one) and I think no one really cares. This is just for getting around a conference when I also had to carry around another bag in my hands. I think that if you get a backpack, it's not so bad if you don't take it so seriously, such as the Saddleback bags which I think are a bad clash.
(I agree with braised in his post above, this is just another take on the same idea I think)

One of the worst looks for men. Find yourself a briefcase or a even a rucksack would be a more sophisticated option than a backpacks...
