a lot of my prof's didn't allow laptops in class at my school.

i personally think that laptops reduce focus (in terms of... facebook browsing and etc.) so you don't pay attention to the material.

No one had laptops when I was in college in the late 80s.

Yet, by the time I was in grad school in the early 00s, many people were using laptops. It seemed those who took notes the old-fashioned way did better in class, while those who used laptops wasted too much time in class surfing the internet.

Both.
I took an statistics class in both grad and undergrad which the professor required us to use a software package. In both classes, I think I was the only one using MSWord to take notes while the others in class had to make space for their pen/paper to write next to their keyboard.

In both occasions the professors told me stop emailing, when they heard me typing. I wasn't and had MSWord up and both times the professor apologized.

right right. onenote is literally perfect for case briefing purposes.

anyways, it depends. most classes i'll use a notebook and sift through the lecturer's BS and write down the good stuff. other classes where i didn't want to miss ANYTHING like a complex history class i'll whip out the laptop and basically type nonstop exactly what the lecturer is saying.

I saw a pic today, one that I can't currently find, of a bunch of kids in a Computer Science course all grouped together in a few rows, and all playing WoW together.

Geek's guild must have been on a raid. I am surprised by how much notebooks are taking the lead. I guess I didn't account for the generational gap amongst posters. And for those who didn't take notes AT ALL, I applaud you Rainmen.

Both. This semester I'm not using my laptop for taking notes, but I do use it for a couple of reports and we deliver all our hand-ins for my Structural Mechanics class online.

I used to take a lot of notes on my laptop during Computer Science, but I'm done with that class, so most of the time I leave my laptop at home and take notes in a notebook.

Notebook only. I'm relatively slow as a typer and I can write a hell of a lot faster. Also I don't have to worry about having to format charts or the like, I can simply copy them down; one other thing is nothing can go "wrong" with a notebook unlike computers which can loose battery, freeze up, ect.

Pen and paper. When I'd bring my laptop to class I'd end up just day trading all day.

Was all about "mind maps" when taking class notes.

I type 100 wpm, and write like a 7 year old marsupial, but still, taking notes by hand wins.

+1

This is what a "laptop" looked like when I was in college:

Pen and paper. My notes are all but incoherent to anyone else - I doodle a lot (untreated ADD?) to keep focused and my recall on the notes is tied into what I was doodling while I took notes as much as anything.

Paper notes. I find that typing doesn't really help commit things to memory like writing. Plus, on a computer, it's much too easy to let your mind wander.

Also, all the people with laptops in class in my university were total melvins.
