3. Gucci Horsebit Loafer

I think that boils down to personal preference...boundaries of good style should be well defined, but not so restrictive as to prevent the exercise of originality.

In my opinion, the shoes any gentleman should have are:

1. Black and brown wing tips. I personally love Barker Black's designs.

2. Driving shoes, in red and blue of course, but purple and green also look good. Tod's also makes some pretty nice ones.

3. Suede slippers: somewhat delicate and impractical, but they're beautiful, and that's the point. The cognoscenti seem to favor Belgians.

4. Opera pumps: these are somewhat controversial, but the only thing appropriate for black tie.

5. Strappy sandals or slippers for casual wear: closed shoes aren't always appropriate, and a gentleman should always be dressed fittingly for the occasion.

6. Velvet shoes: are definitely not for everybody. But, they seem awfully rarefied. Although I'll probably be panned for saying it, Ralph Lauren makes really nice ones.

Can you confirm it's a shoe? Reminds me of a nuclear submarine... My must have shoes: - A brown wholecut - A black Oxford - A brown full-brogue - A brown half-brogue - A suede chukka Cheers P.S.: Limiting myself to only 5 is painful. Add a pair of double monks at least...

only if you can do them seamless whole cut with a lasar medalion, on a triple sole with a double norwegian storm welt with toothpick waists and burnishing on the toes sides of the vamp and heel counters too with waxed contrasted laces!
