London-based designer thomas heatherwick created this amazing 55 ton steel staircase for the opening of the new longchamps store in new york last year and has since recieved praise from all angles. the construction of the staircase was apparently a logistical nightmare, each of the 17 seperate units having to be installed precisely, stretching up to the ceiling.

^^^ would be more impressive without the rails. Without the rails it wouldn't even look like stairs. I guess since it sounds like it's a public building .. it'd be a little weird and pretty dangerous without the rails though. Still .. very cool .

If you're shopping for leather goods in a store that has a multi-million dollar staircase, you're probably paying too much.

Strictly speaking this is not a staircase, but it's pretty cool - and the precursor to the Guggenheim (the original, natch).

I thought the same thing. The rails does unjust to the design.

THis would probably be my vote. I remember seeing it as a kid. I was torn between a career in architecture and law.

It'll look like the apple store in boston.

Don't have a photo of the stair ... but what appeals to me here is the hall to which the stair leads.
