That pic was taken at Lynmar Estates, Manton. Have you been there? It was one of two places that the folks at Merry Edwards suggested we try, due to liking her Chard.

one of the best Christmas gifts I received this year was a 6-bottle padded wine carrying case with two straps (one for the shoulder, the other for the hand), a thermo lining, and a frezzer pack pouch for temperature regulation (freezer pouch included!). On the front are my initials in 72 font bold. It will make wine acquisition trips out to Jersey so much easier and for this reason alone I am super excited.

I'll make sure my next job from Solito has a patch pocket that can accomodate a normal sized pocket protector.

Nicely done.

I like Perrin products. The Chateauneuf is pretty good. They produce an excellent Gigondas. But I think the quiet star is the Vacqueyras. Give the CAD$24 beaut a two hour decant and it just blooms.

No. I have spent a ton of time in Napa, much less in Sonoma. I have always been much more of a cab lover than anything else. I like some chards, but I prefer the astringent ones made by the great cab houses like Ridge and Montelena and Mayacamas. You can taste those at their wineries, even if the grapes are not necessarily grown in Napa (and most are not, or if they are, at the southern end of the valley).

They aren't bad for a deep second label from a great producer. Some of the '80s Beaucastel CdPs were mindblowing. For second tier Rhone vineyards, I think you can find much better wines from smaller producers.

I need to get my hands on a Montelena or Mayacamas.

As far as Chard goes, I think I'm going to end up liking what I see as a cross between "Cali Char" and "White Burgundy." The ones I am being drawn to have a faint touch of butter, noticeable but not over bearing oak, and a crisp, light minerality and acid.

Right or wrong, I mentally classify the typical Cali chard as over oaked and a "butter ball," and the typical White Burgundy as very mineralized and almost austere, compared to the typical Cali.

There is no Cal chard as good as a great white Burg (whereas I would say that there are several cabs that are as good as a great Bordeaux). Also, none of them get that Chablis steeliness, at least none that I have tried. My favorites, though, are as you say: sort of in the middle. Though my favorite white Burgs are not super astringent either.

I have had very few old CA chards, and many more old white Burgs, so on that score it is hard to compare. White Burg gets amazingly dark and sweetens as it ages.

your store's staff is usually pretty good with stuff like this too. It can get difficult to find some of these smaller producers (but wine-searcher is pretty awesome for this).

Manton - any love for Loire whites?

Yes, but that's our problem. The LCBO. My girl is wonderful, but, oh, the LCBO stories she tells me.

I have enjoyed them when I have had them, but I know next to nothing about them. I do have some Muscadet chilling in my "cellar" right now, however.

Domaine de la Charbonniere makes the best Vacqueyras I have tasted. There are tons of good Gigondas including Domaine Les Pallieres and Cayron. I don't love the big wineries for these kinds of wines.
