That's pretty much all I know too. I haggled the hell out of one of the saleswomen in the Silk Market for some souvenirs, and on the way out I said "xie xie." The look on her face afterward was absolute shock.

Li Qun is only one story, but with a bunch of narrow hallways, and when you first walk in you head towards the oven with all the ducks roasting in it. Along one of the hallways they had pictures and newspaper clippings of all the foreign diplomats and others who have eaten there - ring any bells?

Mr. K's, an absurdly expensive and vulgar Chinese restaurant in DC (now closed, sadly), had the best Peking Duck I have ever had.

There is a Mr. K's in New York, but it is not as good.

can't find a good place for it in houston.

i want to get the whole duck but everywhere i go if i order a whole duck they bring out bits of the meat already shredded and it never looks close to a whole duck. and the quality is just never top notch. usually always too dry for my tastes.

Are you in Chicago? The peking duck dinner at Sun Wah is around $30 and will feed more or less about 4 people depending on how much they eat.

I've had Peking Duck, twice, at what has been touted to me as the best place for it in Hong Kong: Spring Deer in Kowloon. Dunno if the HK members want to chime in here, but I was unimpressed. I think it's fine, but it does not cross into sublime for me.

In its heyday, the Mandarin in San Francisco had the very best Peking Duck I have tasted. Now there are a few specialists in the area, but nobody quite as good. I've had PD in several other places in the US, but can't think of a place that makes as nice a duck as what you will find in San Francisco.

My mother used to make it a lot at home when I was a kid. I remember her blowing the damn things up herself.
