bro, the people i work with say this non-stop.

The worst offender sat next to me in a meeting, i looked over at him and said, "if you sit next to me you cant say 'bro' for the next 1/2 our".

Which was fallowed by dead silence.

I had some fun with a friend who used that way too much for my liking. I kept taking him literally on FB everytime he posted about something being 'sick', and I think I broke him of that habit.

This occurs when that functions as a pronoun and which is a relative pronoun. It's sometimes unavoidable without a restructuring of the sentence. It's also a lot less ugly than 'that that'. E.g. 'He only focuses on that which increases his wealth.' A simple evasion is to say 'that thing which', but this makes the sentence more verbose and also less specific; it's not a real solution. Other languages have distinguished between 'that' as a determiner and 'that' as a pronoun. English lost this distinction somewhere during its simplification.
