I Find Ties Annoying. Help!

Greetings.

I like ties in terms of how good they tend to look. But I don't like wearing them, because they "get in the way" too much! For example, when I go out to lunch, there is always that tie to worry about not spilling anything on. Also, when sitting in a chair and reading with a book in your lap, one has again to worry about that tie getting in the way. In short, I tend to "think about" or "be aware of" or "be annoyed by the presence of" my ties too often. Seems like a burden in some ways.

What suggestions do you have to such annoyances? Can you help me make it stop?

Regards,
Interface.

Does your shirt bother you as well? Your trousers? They can get food on them. It's just clothes. The issue is not with the tie. The issue is with your unfamiliarity with the tie. Relax and enjoy.

Man, I envy you. I so wish more people at my office wore ties, so I could wear them acceptably!

Solutions:
Use a tie bar
Use a tie pin
Wear a vest over your tie
Wear a sweater over your tie
Wear a bow tie
Take your tie off when you eat

Actually I never really got started with that plan. I just started having second thoughts, like the one currently being discussed.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Have you managed to do that? To just act as if you had no tie/clothes on even if you're wearing them? Maybe I could train myself to just ignore them like you say.

Call me boorish but I flip my tie over my shoulder while eating lunch.

For food - tie bars, vests, sweaters; but really, just be careful. Please don't put it in your shirt pocket or tuck it between the buttons. I once went out to lunch with a guy who made a big deal about tossing his tie over his shoulder to keep it from getting dripped on by his hamburger. He suggested I do the same or eat at my own peril. I politely declined and laughed out loud when he leaned forward and his tie slid off his shoulder into a puddle of ketchup.

As others said, tie pins and tie bars. They're a great investment and add to your outfit anyways.
