Looking around for first sportcoat - modern fit brands?

Hi all,

I am looking around at getting my first sportcoat for casual wear and probably for the office sometimes. I'd like something that I can wear with jeans and also something that can be thrown on with some slacks and a semi-dress shirt to wear to work. I may end up buying a couple of jackets, it just depends on what I find.

So my question - can anyone recommend or point me in the direction of some brands/"models"/sites that have nice, modern fit jackets? I generally tend to lean towards grey/black/charcoal/cream vs. navy or brown, but I'm open to anything as long as I can make it work - just looking for some ideas.

Thanks!

Try on some Ralph Lauren Black Label.

If you add your location to your profile, we might be able to suggest places to find.

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check that out later today. I updated my profile with my location. I'm in Huntsville, AL which is about 1.5 hours from Nashville and Birmingham and I think about 2.5-3 hours from Atlanta.

All I've got right now is waist size (~34) and chest size (~38). I probably need to go somewhere to try some things on to get a definite fit, but I figure I can probably order a ~38 jacket and be ok after some tailoring - I could be wrong though

I'd guess Black Label (aka RLBL) won't be the best fit: with a 38" chest, it's cut for someone with a 31" waist. Might be too severe a drop, but give it a whirl. In your price range, you'd probably have to buy from the outlet in NY (by phone).

Look into getting a sportscoat made by TAT.

I might also try to get something from Z Zegna or Varvatos from a bargain retailer like Filene's. Construction quality of these brands won't be high by forum standards, but I like both cuts, and they're not as severe as RLBL.

Last idea: Paul Smith, though this'll be harder to find on discount.
