SF is great if you see it from the right angle.

Two great ones are from the bay, about halfway between Alcatraz and the GG channel. The other is on the 280. You are coming along, and all you can see is Twin Peaks, and these awful box houses on the southern downslope. Then the double deck freeway curves around the mountain and, Bam!, all at once you can see the whole skyline from Japantown to Rincon Hill.

tel aviv has a grat skyline - what I like most about it is that I can remember when each of the (tall) buildings were built, so it has very special assosiations to me.

athens can be cool - from the right places you see tall modern buildings, and the acropolis in the background

and I would agree with Hong Kong
and sidney

of the ones i've been to, HK visually but SF has my heart and it feels like seeing a good good friend you haven't seen in awhile.

+1 on the 280 approach. Whenever I have friends visiting, especially first-time visitors, I always bring them to the city from the airport this way. The looks on their faces as we turn that corner are priceless.
