GF here. I like being clean shaven, she likes beards. I grew chops as a compromise.

Seriously? Maybe that is true of some polls, but this one is neither self-serving nor dumb. The people seem to like it and have provided interesting answers. The current popularity of facial hair would make a better poll, but even Harris Interactive would have a hard time getting good results with it. Why people dislike shaving is another idea, but it's not about to be polled here.

I tried growing a beard to hide a ********/weak-ish chin combination. Then I saw how raggedy it looked and decided it would be preferable to jut my chin out 24/7 and hope for an industrial accident to reduce my nose roughly 50%. No luck thus far.

Combination of self expression and GF. She hates chops big time, I used to wear them all the time. Compromise is a short cut full beard (so short it would not hide lack or excess of chin...).

Something valuable learned. Yeah, women tend to dislike copious facial hair. As your story suggests, maybe the typical guy who wants his facial hair and listens to his woman cuts it shorter rather than gets rid of it all. It's all a nefarious plot for a new best-seller, How to know a man by his facial hair - or not

Although I haven't lived in a cold environment for several years I also grow a beard in the fall and winter. In fact, I am about 5 days into this year's beard and am starting to itch a bit - should pass in a couple of days.

I started because of shaving. Not that I don't like shaving (there are few things as satisfying as a good wet shave), but my skin is sensitive enough that I can't shave more than every other day (and once every three days is better). I found that it was easier, more comfortable, and better looking to keep a short beard than to alternate between shaving and stubble.

I don't have a moustache, because it's too thin and not connected to my beard. The few times I've tried for a few days, I get disgusted with it and shave it off. I would like a moustache, though, because I feel like the beard is a little unbalanced - especially because I also have no hair on my bottom lip. Maybe the moustache will get thicker over the next few years.

Most of it for me is laziness. Shaving my legs and face every few days is a bit annoying, so I just do one or the other. It also covers up a few small scars I have on my chin, and I think two days growth is about perfect.

Have you tried changing the way you shave? Good razor, hydrated skin, all that? One of the website articles discusses that. Of course, maybe not you, but after a while guys often become attached to their facial hair and don't want to shave unless have to.

Yes. It's a lot better than it used to be, but still uncomfortable for me to shave two days in a row. Luckily, my facial hair is quite light and doesn't grow too quickly, so I probably could go clean shaven if I shaved every other day, but... I'm also lazy.

I sported a big western style stache'(think Kurt Russell in Tombstone) for years and then grew a short, super neat beard to give me more of a jaw line and to balance out my face since I have moderate length curly hair. Now people call me "hercules". I do lift weights but I'm no Steve Reeves (I'm 6', 190 pounds, 45" chest, 33" waist).
