The State of Black Tie: Your Observations

I think it depends on what the black tie event stipulates for dress code. If it just says black tie (and not creative black tie or black tie optional) I would respect the dress code and go black. If it mentions creative or anything like that, feel free to add in the color. I'm guessing based on the "overly casual" statement that creative black tie may be in the cards, in which case, probably not an issue.

Oh, liberties abound. I'm likely to be smote from the heavens above before being tsk-tsk'd over my sock choice, so very safe on the adherence to rules front.
It would actually help to see the slippers as black silk socks usually work nicely with burgundy. Are the edge of the soles black? If you don't go with black socks, then the next natural sock choice would be one that matches the color of the slipper.
