+1. A friend had his car stolen about 6 months after moving to the city, but he wasn't upset, since he wouldn't have to pay for insurance or parking. It struck me as a strange attitude, but then I've never tried to drive/park in NYC.

I was walking around SoHo the other day, when a guy in a new 911 Turbo got stopped trying to make a right turn on green by a massive mob of people crossing the street.

I got a good look at the car (one of my favorites), and the driver, who looked exactly like one of the Italian F1 race car drivers -- I know I've seen the guy before.

Once the foot traffic cleared, he floored it out of there. Fun to watch: he clearly didn't care much for the people around him nor the car.

This was my answer for a long time (insert subway/taxi pix), but if you have kids, a weekend place, relatives in the tri-state area, etc. you find yourself in need of one. Black Towncar-types prevail in the corporate car service sector, but I 've noticed many people with drivers (and lots of regular folks, too) seem to favor the ridiculous SUV, usually in black

. We have a Passat wagon. Unless you're a purist, I'd skip the standard transmission.....

C'mon man. You're telling me you never saw the movie that dictates what to drive in NYC? Have we learned nothing from the late Isaac Hayes? Twin chandeliers are necessary.

When visiting and living in the downtown areas of some smaller American cities, I've often thought a mid 60s Continental would be nice. Note the suicide rear doors.

Those cities have much easier parking and less traffic though.

No, it's not really that bad, especially if you don't drive much. But if you use your car frequently you're going to spend time in crawling stop-and-go traffic. For me, this type of driving takes the joy out of using the standard T.

There's such a decline in manual transmissions. I guess mainly because of traffic and I also believe that it's because people are too busy eating, talking on the cell, playing with their Tom Toms / CD players...

I don't have to drive in that much traffic so I have trouble imagining that it's so bad as to only want an automatic. It's not that I don't believe what you're saying, I just don't have the experience of that much traffic.

I recently started car shopping and I've found that several of the Subarus / Hondas I want aren't sold with MT any more.

There are two seperate issues:

1) The car you'd have if you drove in NYC
2) The car you'd have your DRIVER have if somebody else drove for you in NYC

Parking in the garage of my apartment in NYC costs $450/month, and you don't even get a fixed spot. You have to give it to the "attendants" who are "NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE". I sold my Mercedes when I moved to this town. Even if I had it here I'd rarely use it.

Between the 3rd world taxi drivers, double and triple parking on some streets, and $20 or $30 for the FIRST hour of parking in a lot... well, you are forced to take the subway ($2 a trip).

If it were MY car in NYC, I'd want a beat up something with a cattle "fence"(?) on the front bumper. So when I run into the taxis "accidentally" they would lose, not me.
