I wouldn't use the express sponge stuff at all. I used to use it on uniform shoes like ten years ago and from what I remember it is sort of like paint. Not like the wax polish at all.

Try re-oiling and using a soft brush, it may help remove the shine.

Regular conditioning is going to be the most important thing you can do for your boots. Invest in a supply of something like Obenaufs, Venetian, Filson, Montana Pitch Blend, etc. Some folks will just condition and buff with a soft brush, not polishing their boots at all. It sounds as if you have oil, so you are likely set on this front, try just buffing and see how you like the finish.

There really is no shortcut to getting a good polished finish to your boots, it will involve a thin applications of polish, a brush and some elbow grease. A simple tin of Kiwi paste polish - see below - and a brush will be good enough for getting an occasional shine. You can get fancier polish - Saphir, Meltonian, etc - but kiwi will do and it is pretty much available everywhere.

I hate my wolverine 1K miles. The leather is awful and the stitching is very poor.

I'm going to wear them every other day or so, and only brush them once a week, if even that much. I'm going to treat the leather with nothing other than the matching cordovan color shoe cream every month, and oil them with neatsfoot oil three times a year. I'm curious to see what will happen to them.

They will likely be just fine for a good few years. Too much neatsfoot oil could overly soften the leather, so you may end up with a flaccid bull penis leather look.

That's one reason I hate them so much!

Why not return them again for refund or exchange ?

Because I already sent back a pair that had an eyelet ripped out of the leather, and this pair is the pair that they sent me to replace that pair. I'm just done with wolverine and chromexcel.

I know, hence the use of the words 'again' and 'refund'.

There's no reason to use a leather-soled boot to do yard work when there are more robust and modern boots available that are actually meant for doing outdoor work, like most of the redwings that are not in the "heritage" collection, and a few that are.

Either way, they have failed to fill my expectations, and so I'm saving up for a pair of White's bounty hunters. And if finances don't allow that, I'll replace them with some redwing beckman's or Iron rangers. Those things seem bulletproof compared to the two wolverines I've owned.

Though, aside from the flacid bull penis and the scuffiness of the leather, half-assed construction, etc, the boot is very nice. The pattern and form of the boot is very pleasing to the eye, no debate there.
