Is there anything unfashionable about wearing white sneakers? or are only white tennis shoes the problem?

I've always heard "never wear white sneakers". Why is this suddenly OK if you're wearing Common Projects?

That question belongs in streetwear, but white tennis shoes are the big evil. Basically, to wear white sneakers they have to be sleek, simple and classic, like chucks, or their vastly overpriced cousin in the common projects.

Basically, avoid the Seinfeld look.

Honestly, I think it's best to avoid them altogether. Plenty of other colors.

Have you visited the Streetwear & Denim section of Styleforum?
Here: http://www.styleforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=13

You may consider posting your question there for better results regarding white sneakers.
Not that we don't wear them, but sneaker questions will probably be better served over there.

Certain silhouettes, like Stan Smiths, Rod Lavers, and Superstars, are good year round. Personally, I think white sneakers are best in spring/summer when the weather is warmer. The classics I mentioned can be worn with khakis, jeans and shorts casually.

Post a picture of the white shoe you are thinking of. Some white shoes are classic (Converse [Purcells & Chucks], Keds, old-school Vans, Adidas [Smith and Laver], Feiyue or, higher-end like Common Projects, 3:33 etc.) and some are horrible (Reeboks, Nike, British Knights). My rule is the more padding a white shoe has, the less attractive it is.

American tourists are notorious for wearing ugly white sneakers when traveling.

They are usually of the chunky, techy sort that don't work well with streetwear and then are worn in a context where a non-athletic shoe would be a better choice.

Nothing wrong with a classic white sneaker but thought should be given about when and where they are worn.

The classic ones aren't just ok but surely a staple wardrobe item? Converse, Vans, Superga, PF Flyers, and those ones that I used to own but I've forgotten the name of - you know, French, Lennon's wearing them on the cover of Abbey Road*.
Anything chunkier than a Stan Smith, however, and I'd be a bit wary maself. Leave them to the baseball cap-wearing Rat Boys you catch trying to steal your car, if you're British (or the American tourist, obviously).

[*Edit: They're called Spring Court! Memory's going to blazes as I'm hitting 40!]

spring courts are always cool and not as expensive.

White sneakers are only ok if you are English. No one else can pull that off.
