Do people change buttons on jackets with out looking dumb? I have a very casual Polo sports coat (real nice, but goes best with a pair of nice jeans and a tshirt) and think it's deserving of better buttons (has junk ones).

What's up with adding vintage buttons to a jacket? How do people feel about it.

Would you try to find good looking buttons for your jacket or buttons that "could have been" on the jacket, i.e. same nation/vintage, etc.

I almost feel that I should not add some vintage European buttons to a Polo.. but those are the ones I like the most.

I was disappointed recently to find that my alma mater does not offer blazer buttons (or at least not on their website). It's common to swap brass for horn or vice versa, too, or even mother of pearl.

(Now I'm considering mother-of-toilet-seat blazer buttons.)

I've updated buttons on a sportcoat and suit. On the suit, one of the bottons was lost and I couldn't find a good match. On the sportcoat I just updated them because I didn't like the existing buttons. A jacket's worth of decent buttons will cost around $20 at retail plus whatever the tailor charges to sew them on. So it can be worthwhile to buy a thrift store jacket just for the buttons. I've bought buttons locally and online. Online I've had a good experience with:

Try Ben Silver for college blazer buttons. They carry from many schools.

Also check eBay. I've found some from local jewelers for various alma maters.
