Thanks, guys. The deal is done. It's fun. Like twenty compliments on it since yesterday. Some little kid had his face pressed up to the glass of his Mom's car looking at it on the highway. Amazing. Must learn how to drive it better, though. ~ H

What % of gross income do you guys think is reasonable to spend on a car?

Also, if I bough a shitbox for a year and parked it, do you that would make a big difference towards getting lower insurance next year on a nice car? I am over 25 but insurance quotes i've gotten are still really high because i've never been insured on a car before. I don't know if I will or not, but I am considering it... Although I can walk and take the subway for most things, it's definitely easier to have a car in TO.

And nice car hunts. I have a hard on for the new lotus though.

I do not think there is a fixed percent but changes along as income changes. IMO it should decrease with income. Lotus are one of the most expensive to insure in the price bracket.

Are you talking MRSP v. gross, a financed buy v. monthly gross or a lease v monthly gross? Lease wise, I'd say no more than 2-3% or your gross monthly.

That's not even be possible for most people... If you're on an 40k/yr salary, that's like 100/mo on your car. What can you lease for that little money?

Um. Either earn more money or buy a cheap car until you earn more money. You can get 72 months no interest on almost anything right now. That's about $13-14/month per 1k.

I don't make 40k... Just saying it seemed like a really small number. I spend more on clothes when i'm employed...

That Z4 M is da bomb. I drove a convertible version before, but I suspect the coupe is even better because of the structural integrity of the body. Enjoy!

Well, not to pull the "in your dad's basement," but I was tossing out a number I thought was prudent, based on maintaining an entire household. Cars are depreciating assets and outside of other baggage, are just transportation, right?

So without the huge downpayment (I've never gotten the point of making a downpayment on something you're not even buying), this means you would need to make $80k/year to lease a Honda Fit.... I'm pretty conservative with my spending, but this seemsa little extreme...

It's true, but they can be fun toys too. If you buy used instead of new and don't drive too much, it's not that much of a waste, except the insurance, I guess.
