What to wear for private musical performance?

I think of the "tux" or dark business suit as traditional musician's outfits for recitals. I think that what you described sounds fine, and is appropriately formal. While the guests may or may not dress that formally, I think it's highly appropriate for YOU to do so. Among other things, it sends the message that you went to the trouble to dress well to show your appreciation for their sponsorship.

Wear something comfortable and cool too. A performance in a crowded home around the holidays screams stuffy and hot to me. So, heavy wool might not be a good idea.
