Yes, it's "sad".......

Actually, I don't mind the watch, it's that hideous-looking band on it. If it was steel/leather/most things it would look better, but that cotton/rattan whatever-the-hell it is, is not flattering at all.

I agree; that strap is absolutely hideous! A nice leather band would have been more suitable...

The Master Compressor you showed me is definitively better looking than the pictures I found on the net. But I certainly would not say it is JLC's nicest watch

Judging a watch by the strap it's on is a novice mistake that I don't expect from people who show any real interest in watches. I agree that strap is hideous, the watch is not - it's beautiful and a real horological feat by JLC - a true classic

Try Fendi. They have nice stuff in the $300 range.

I don't believe this is the general concensus for a watch at this price at all. I've had a quartz movement Swiss Army watch I was given when I was 7 years old that has never missed a tick (as long as I replace the battery).....I've now owned it for over 15 years. I think it has more than justified my $300.
Maybe I should have said forum consensus

I'm wearing a skagen quartz watch right now--I'm not really a watch guy, honestly. I think whacked put the attraction of mechanical movements well, though. Having a mechanical movement means buying (a little) into the engineering, craft, whatever of watchmaking. That appeals to a lot of people who want to know they have a piece of that tradition, even if a $200 seiko has very little in common with a more expensive piece.

I don't disagree that there are many attractive/good value quartz watches, and certainly some are styled in ways that a mechanical cannot match at the same pricepoint, if at all.

I went and looked at some of their stuff... I liked their watches a lot... none in the $300 range though

Yeap. You can change the strap if you don't like it, so it is kind of stupid to object to the watch because of the strap. I will have to agree that the Master Compressor series isn't the best looking line that JLC offers.
