In some pics I've seen it almost looks like gray felt, though I imagine it's not. ;-)

What's the material? What's the history behind it?

Thanks very much!

Rubber tree (no giggling!) plantations are to be found in tropical climes. When tapped these trees ooze goo that is the basis for natural (non-petroleum) rubber. "Plantation crepe" layered in sheets is a natural rubber product. Shoe soles of plantation crepe normally exhibit a light tan color, sometimes side dyed, and coarse surface. The flexible soles are somewhat sticky and become more so at higher temperatures, darkening with grime accululation. Usually found on sportier shoes and sometimes on Espadrillia. Plantation crepe soles are the soles of brothel creepers > (first sentence description is of WWII "desert boots") http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothel_creepers

They do work perfectly as intended. I swear by them. Nobody hears me walking in the brothel, when I am wearing my Crepe soles.
