After so many months finally picked Salammbo back up on Sunday night and finished the last 2 chapters. WTF. Flaubert goes from sheer brilliance with Madame Bovary to this garbage. At least I finished it though.

I guess Robert Graves spoiled me a bit too much as far as historical fiction goes.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the surrender of the traitorous Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House earlier this month, I've been reading a host of books on the Civil War. James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" is what I'm on right now. It's excellent. Thoroughly worthy of it's Pulitzer.

Edit: Here's a fun fact - in 1512 there were around 50,000 inhabitants of Rome, and 7,000 of them were prostitutes. After the 1527 Sack of Rome, the total population was reduced down to around 10,000.
